For the past three years of The Rational Male there’s been a consistent presence in the comment threads of guys seeking advice for particular situations with regards to Game. Whether it’s fine tuning certain aspects of Game or a larger consensus of the guys participating in my comment threads it’s become obvious there’s a need for a dedicated page and comment thread to address these Field Reports.
So I’m instituting this page for exactly this. If there is some urgency to have members of The Rational Male community analyze your particular situation feel free to hit anyone up in the comments of my current post, but please refer them to your particular field report with a link to your comment here. I’m hoping this will alleviate the mass of posts for field report analysis and Game specific insights piled into the main blog post for any given week.
There will be some rules for this “forum” as such. I ask that you only keep your comments to addressing the field reports at hand and save your larger theoretical stuff for the main posts, or if relevant, keep the “bigger scope of things” posts to being as succinct as possible. There will be no moderation in this comment thread (spamming excepted), so realize it will be a very hot kitchen before you post. I will impose no restrictions on video links here, nor will I limit links to various, but pertinent articles.
Understand, this is an experiment for now. It’s likely this comment thread will exceed thousands of comments. I’ll be instituting new comment plug-ins for wordpress to deal with this in the future, but I may archive this page the the posts and refresh this page in the future as well. If this gets cumbersome I may simply institute a dedicated forum-style sub-site of The Rational Male to accommodate for Game specific questions.
So have at it, post your field reports and feel free to comment on the ones you have some particular insight for. Took the advice from a while back with regards to clothes…. gotta question. Bought a nice looking sport coat for a few hundred (Brooks Bros). Took it to be tailored (been a long time since I’ve done that) and was floored by the $160 it would take to ‘fit’ it. Does this sound reasonable? Did it anyway but was wondering. Didn’t seem like much work, slight shortening of the sleeves, pulled in around the waist, and let out a bit behind the collar.

Were you fitted for the coat prior to purchase? $160 in alterations seems a bit obscene if so.
I usually rely upon solid recommendations of great work by yelp or similar. Sometimes you can find great tailors at dry-cleaners as well but I would depend upon recommendations from people your trust before you sacrifice a nice jacket on a chance.
I too took some advice from the fashion thread and bought some solid color polos on sale and plan to simplify my approach aesthetically by avoiding patterns and having a couple of looks I can rely on.
Zipper. Depends on where you are… In a major metro that’s not far off, it’s high no doubt, but not far off. Sleeves are easy (from the hand end, not the shoulder), taking it in through the waist can be easy or harder, depends how much and how they do it. Collars are generally difficult and expensive. Make sure you have a good fit in the shoulders and the collar (and length! Can’t make them too much longer!) before you buy it, above all else. Doc Zipper I like Polo RL (the ones made by Corneliani), Oxxford, Paul Stuart, Southwick, and Samuelsohn but my taste is more traddy. Some of the later brands can be a little boxy. I also like a wider lapel, side vents, and where i can a 3/2 roll. Also love a 1/4 lining or a french lined coat. Do some investigation of the model and year. Know your measurements! Something like this asking $95! Offer $40-50. Cut the crap out of it. Nice spread V, narrow waist, fat lapel (broadens the chest), trim the sleeve to show just about 1″ of cuff instead of 1/4″… That micro herringbone will set you apart from the 364 other guys “dressed up” in the same baggy blue blazer…

I heartily cosign Sentient on Knowing Your Measurements. Shit, I’m not above taking a tape measure with me when I’m shopping for suits/sport coats. Lol, sometimes it saves me from even going into a fitting room. It’s an absolute MUST when ordering online though. If possible, find a good tailor and stick with him/her. I have a few custom tailored suits and jackets, mainly because I found a material/color combo that was killer, but in the thousands of dollar range. As far as the wingman guy is concerned, maybe wingman wasn’t the right word. I didn’t mean mystery style wingman. Deal here is the usual, people will open and chat, but they aren’t interested in meeting new people. So they are hard to hook…and honestly, I’m not really interested in talking to them for very long.
Maybe they detect that you’re not really interested in them and that makes them hard to hook.
I’m genuinely interested in people and they ask me to join them at their tables or occasionally go get breakfast with them. I’ve added some fb friends from dancers and staff at the bar.
