It’s interesting to read responses from women on this one. Women “back when” were the ones competing for the best man (i.e. most land, wealth, assets, etc…) with all other women so it was best that each woman created this “mystery”…to stand out from other women.

We see it, today, on social media with selfies, tats, hair coloring, etc….to stand out (grab attention).

Women can argue all day long that a man created this “mystique” but in my opinion it’s nonsense. It’s women competing for survival (or the best) so they are using all tools necessary in their tool kit.
